Meet TAROjin Yuka Morinaga, Stylist to the TV Stars

SCROLL

"A native of Tokyo's key fashion capital, Yuka is a stylist to the TV Stars"
Yuka Morinaga is a Harajuku local, a jewellery designer and a stylist to the stars. She's also a Taro Jin, one of Taro's close-knit collaborators who can not only help you upgrade your style, but also enhance your knowledge of Japan's fashion scene.

Based out of Harajuku, one of Tokyo's key fashion capitals, Yuka has gained respect and attention for being the woman responsible for nationally loved Japanese TV personality and comedian Kosakai Kazuki's iconic looks. Working with this local icon, Yuka crafts pieces that are both attention-commanding in their sophistication while still being casual and playful.

As a child, it seemed that Yuka's career path had already been laid out "I wanted to be a hairdresser" she explains, "I was even working part-time at a hair salon." But after discovering a book on an artist she admired, something changed forever. "In that book, I found an essay written by a stylist," Yuka says they spoke about the transcendent experience of witnessing their work on the stage.

"I remember a quote about how they [the stylist] felt when they saw the talent on the stage shining in the stylist's creation, that was such a formative moment for me." It was from here her life's ambitions shifted.

Yuka followed her newfound interest and found herself working at a production and management company where she first met Kosakai-san. After a few years of hard work and passion, Yuka honed the skills, confidence and industry respect to go and pursue a solo venture as a stylist, taking her creativity, years of knowledge and Kosakai-san as a client with her.

Over the years she's continued to grow working with other big-name Japanese talents who’ve graced Japanese stage and TV screen. One thing you'll notice about Yuka's key clientele is that they're all men. "I get along with male clients well" she explains, it's something about their easy-going attitude and her affable demeanour that works so harmoniously, and why she's clearly a favourite with comedians.

"To style someone properly, I need to know so much about a person.... I need to build on the story of that person"
"Every day looks quite different," she explains when quizzed about her routine. "If I'm styling for a regular show I know exactly what's required, I can select clothes in a matter of seconds, as long as I know about the situation I'm dressing for as well as who's wearing it."

While Yuka makes being a stylist of her calibre sound easy, there's a lot more to it than just picking clothes. "People always ask me what type of clothes should you put on me," she says, "but to style someone properly, I need to know so much about a person, what they like, what they eat, their lifestyle. I need to build on the story of that person," that's what styling is all about.

Yuta Morinaga bio
Yuka Morinaga is a Harajuku based stylist and jewellery designer, with a wealth of experience working alongside some of Japan's most familiar male celebrity faces.

While her talents are multifaceted, it's Yuka's uncanny ability to create attention-commanding ensembles that exude sophistication while still being casual and playful that's most enthralling.

Throughout her career, she's gained respect and admiration in particular for being the woman responsible for nationally loved Japanese TV personality and comedian Kosakai Kazuki's iconic looks, for whom she styles exclusively.

In 2010, inspired by her own experience with a metal allergy, Yuka launched jewellery brand CELLE, an artisanal label that crafts delicate, tasteful pieces suitable for all skin types.
